|"The NICE-SUGAR study is a multi-centre, open label, randomised trial comparing the effects of two blood glucose targets on 90 day all cause mortality in ICU patients. Blood glucose may be controlled in both groups by use of an insulin infusion. The insulin infusion is commenced if the blood glucose exceeds the upper limit of the range and the infusion rate is adjusted to maintain the blood glucose level within the allocated range. Approximately 6100 patients will be recruited from more than 35 centres from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and America over two years. Follow up data is collected at 28 and 90 days after randomisation and at 6 months in the case of patients with traumatic brain injury. All data is recorded via the web-based system. Web-based randomisation and the treatment algorithm are available at all times."
